Growth of online sales was always going to increase further – we’ve seen this year on year for over 10 years now – but who would have thought that it would take a virus to really push it to the next level?

By far the biggest news to come out of who are the biggest losers from coronavirus, is Primark. Having had the best part of three months of being unable to shop at physical stores, increased volumes of people have been forced to go online to make purchases. Many of these may not have made a purchase online previously, but now that they have done so, they could find this much more convenient, and reduce their trips out as a result.

In 2019, reports from various data agencies stated that online shopping would equate to more than double its current levels by 2028. Based on the surge in 2020, we’re already seeing a huge shift towards this target, so much so in fact that we could achieve this initial forecast a couple of years early. A recent study has found that 12% of all people questioned say they would be happy to do more of their shopping online in future.
